Even though the newly inducted Indian Reserved Battalion (IRB) personnel, who hail from Kukis, Naga, Meitei and other communities, were trained together in Assam, it would be unrealistic on ground to work together in Manipur as the ethnic deep divide is far from over
In order to hide his orchestrated ethnic cleansing pogrom against the minority Kuki-Zo community, the Meitei Chief Minister N. Biren Singh tries to enforce peace at any cost. He does not realise that peace cannot be kept by force but through dialogue, mutual understanding or political solutions in the present context.
This unrealistic plan of keeping intact a team of 1,946 newly inducted India Reserve Battalion personnel, particularly from the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo ethnic communities, is the latest political gimmick being played by CM (Crime Minister) N. Biren Singh to gain popularity amongst his radicalised Meitei people.
As the situation of civil war between the Kukis and Meiteis is still tense and they are physically and demographically separated, working together as a team in the police force is impossible in the near future.
Talking to the media on the sidelines of their passing out parade at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Dergaon on Monday, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said they were trained together and they would work together.
“I said in my speech that, as they underwent training together, they will also work together in Manipur. It will be the beginning of an effort to restore peace. There will not be any division (on ethnic lines). We will try to maintain the unity that Manipur had before,” Singh said in response to a query.
Since the beginning of the state-sponsored ethnic cleansing pogrom against the Kuki-Zo community last year, the Meiteis and Kukis are ethnically partitioned and buffer zones have been created to formally separate the two communities. The police forces are also ethnically divided and the personnel are now staying in their respective ancestral homeland. There is no “Manipur Police” as of now, but the “Meitei Police or Kuki-Zo Police”.
Given the situation, the recruits from the 10th and 11th IR battalions could not be organised in Manipur and were flown to Assam to undergo the training.
As per news reports, the incompetent Government of Biren Singh also planned to bring back the newly inducted personnel to Manipur from Assam by road, which the family members or guardians vehemently opposed due to security reasons.Biren’s plan for working together of newly inducted IRB personnel from Meiteis, Kukis unrealistic
