History is witness to the conformity of artistic expression and the production of art and goods that were practised, used, and accepted during those times. Thus Art is a mirror of society. The lewd and demeaning representation of Jesus Christ by the Meiteis as a retaliation for Kukis installing their religious symbol on their own property thus exposing the mentality they possess as a society, the saying “A picture is worth thousands of words” holds true.
What is wrong with people installing a symbol of one’s faith in his/her property, isn’t that his right? Religious beliefs are all myths, but we respected the Meitei mythical beliefs and accommodated them for ages, now does that give them the right over our land? Given a free hand, they will come inside our house to rape seeing their history of rape and cowardly retaliation of using RAPE and SEXUAL molestation as a theme. Humans don’t rape, it is a monstrous animal camouflaged as Humans that Rape. Then why should we accommodate monstrous animals who are ready to attack, torture and kill us any time, given the opportunity. These animals are a threat to human civilization and development. Today you might not be the victim, but are you so sure you won’t be one tomorrow?
All our lands are sacred to us as well, for it is the bond that binds us with our foregone ancestors and as it shall be, with our descendants too in the future. But you have come to our sacred land in the name of religious ritual and polluted our places with your un-sacred activities according to our
customs and societal norms. Our understanding and compromises were limited until that, but if you want to break the ties that bind us with our ancestors by making it yours, then you know the wrath of Kukis shall teach you that Greed destroys.
There have been numerous eyewitnesses and accounts of un-sacred activities the Meiteis indulged in, whenever they come for rituals at The Thangting Hills, which the Meiteis believe is their sacred place too. During their ritual seasons, they made the Hills an Open brothel and bars. Are such acts a part of the ritual in their sacred place? Their religion may give them permission to rape their gods and goddesses, make a brothel or Las Vegas out of a Sacred place, but ours does not. And will sane person allow his property to be made to an open brothel and bars? It won’t be wrong to assume most of them cry today, mostly out of missing the safe haven to indulge in such activities away from the watchful eyes of Meira Paibis, rather than paying homage to their gods.
First, they attacked the churches, then they mocked the religious practices and party inside the church, and now they come to our God. Who indulges them? Who gave them the courage? Who protects them from the eye of the law? These are questions I like to table to the Central Government and The Supreme Court of India. Were you not complicit? Had you pressured the state government that indulged and protected these criminals to take appropriate actions, they wouldn’t have had the courage to break laws that forbid such insane and inhumane acts. Is it not?
Months ago, the world is shaken not only because of the viral video of women who were paraded naked but also because of the justification by Meitei women themselves of this particular incident and the hundred of other rapes the Kuki women were exposed to, in the name of war. The recent pictures of Jesus Christ can be seen as the normalizing gang rape in public on their part. Will India allow it? Now the Kukis are victims but one day Meitei women shall feel the burn that they now indulge their men in the name of war.
Meiteis’ cry for being alienated from their sacred place is bogus. It is the karma for their greed. The Kukis accommodated them despite all the un-sacred activities they indulged in, in the name of their religious rituals until they want to alienate us from our ancestral
land itself. Before judging, put yourself in our shoe first, for all tears are not real and some are crocodile tears, and all dramas are not based on real stories, some are fictional. As someone who has lived with them for ages, if we sometimes can still fall for their fictional Sumang Leela then who are you to be immune to their Oscar-worthy performances? Advising you based on experience, just give yourself some time to rationalise their claim and accusations to keep your sanity intact.
“Khankho” always has been the ideology the Kukis have been taught to possess not only for their micro and macroscopic view on other societies but on any human be it a foreigner or a stranger. Though there is no definite English term for the said word, if we have to explain it, it shall be the aggregate of empathy, humanity, kindness and mercy. Thus, although the Thangting range has been our sacred ancestral land (which the Meiteis claim as Thangjing range), it has been opened to the Meiteis for their religious practices despite it being a myth to us. Respect for other societies, cultures and religions, unless we are threatened with our rights, has long been in our blood and ethos for Khankho has been the ideology we are taught since time immemorial.
Our kindness and understanding for ages has been repaid with an attempt to seize our ancestral land taking advantage of the over-dominant power and authority they have in the government. Why should we be deprived of practising and professing our faith and religion on our property because it is a sacred place to them when it’s a sacred place to us too? If they think their freedom of religion is being violated then they must know, not only our freedom of religion but also our constitutional right of ‘Right to Property’ is violated by them. If the state must protect, it should protect ours as well, for it is their constitutional duty.
Compromising and understanding the Meiteis and their attitude for ages now made us realise the saying “Feed the snake, love the snake, respect the snake, he’s still gonna bite you, for even if fed milk, a snake will still emit poison”.
