On the 14th of June, 2023 Mr. Lunkhosat Doungel (36) was brought in to Motbung PHC from Thingsat village. His condition has stabilized after doctors removed a bullet from his skull. Doungel's story reveals a sad story of how he and his 4 friends escaped from Restorer Home, a rehabilitation center in Lambal Makha Leikai near Heibongpokpi. The inmates did not have access to mobile phones and were unaware of the outside news. However, they were alarmed by the continuing threats they received from the local populace The owner of the home allowed them to escape as he feared something might happen to the five Kukis but didn't provide them anything apart from helping them leave their campus.
The five Kuki youths decided to reach for Kangchup, a nearby hill dominated by the Kuki-Zo groups. But seeing the road covered by the Meitei mobs and Meira Paibis, they then decided to try their luck by going towards Imphal and moving on to their respective villages. They could somehow sneak into the Imphal Valley but could see no opportunity to get out of the capital. They hide themselves around Zomi Villa for some days surviving on whatever eatables they could pick from the roadside. Doungel said that they were also fed by some people (belonging to a community other than the Meiteis). They have nothing with them except the clothes they wore. They made several attempts to get out of the capital during the night, but never got the opportunity. They were scared of approaching the state or central forces, and unsure who to trust, so they kept their trust in themselves. One of them, Mr. Thangtinlien was unfortunately caught by the Arambai Tenggol cadres in front of Classic Hotel, the others managed to hide but their hide-out must have been exposed that Mr. Doungel was also caught by the Arambais.
Doungel was taken to a hilltop near Koirengei. According to him, they made him kneel and shot him from the back. The killers left him, believing him to be dead, but the incessant rain pour brings him back to consciousness. Severely injured in the head, he managed to reach Mapao, a Naga village, who helped him contact the villagers of Thingsat. Doungel feared for the lives of his three other friends, who he says were much younger than him. He also overheard his captors discussing the three that needed to be picked up. As of filing this story, the whereabouts of the other three remain unknown, but they are believed to have been killed.
The victims:

(It must be noted that Lunkhosat Doungel could not remember the exact day and date they escaped, but claimed they had been hiding in Imphal for more than a week before they were captured)

MEITEIS' WRATH

During this chaotic episode, houses, vehicles, business establishments, and even hospitals that served the Kuki-Zo population were set ablaze. Shockingly, this brutal campaign resulted in the loss of 14 Kuki-Zo lives, leaving 132 individuals injured, all the while failing to prompt the filing of a single First Information Report (FIR).
The devastation wrought by the Arambai Tenggol was widespread, extending its destructive reach to atleast 58 Kuki-Zo villages. Villagers from 28 of these settlements found themselves displaced, their homes and livelihoods reduced to ashes. What's even more disconcerting is the presence of the Arambai Tenggol members brandishing semi-automatic weapons, weaponry far exceeding the standard armament of law enforcement agencies.
Furthermore, hate speeches propagated by the Arambai Tenggol have proliferated through the channels of the internet and social media. A disturbing witch hunt targeting Kuki-Zo individuals in hiding has been conducted, with residents pressured to identify fellow Kuki-Zo members for potential future assaults.
Amid this chaos, thousands of terrified Kuki-Zo fled their homes to seek refuge in CRPF camps, with a distressing number among them left without access to food.
The violence has metastasized to Delhi, where the Kuki-Zo have become the target of aggression. Two Kuki-Zo individuals have already suffered injuries. In New Lambulane, approximately 450-500 women and children have sought refuge in a privately-owned residential building. Shockingly, state police or paramilitary forces have yet to be deployed, leaving these vulnerable populations without the protection they so desperately need.
