Unraveiling the Complex Nexus Between Militants and Students Bodies in Manipur

Lately, the Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) has garnered attention across various media platforms for releasing a statement, cautioning of repercussions more severe than anticipated if Mizoram University authorities decide to terminate the PhD program of Teresa Ningthoujam. This strong reaction raises questions about the extent of influence wielded by student bodies, especially when they seem to be acting as mouthpieces for militant groups.

The recent controversy surrounding Teresa Ningthoujam, a PhD student at Mizoram University allegedly involved in fundraising for terror activities in Manipur, has once again brought to light the intricate web of connections between militant groups and student organizations in the region. This nexus, rather than fostering a conducive academic environment, seems to be undermining the very essence of education and student activism.

The MUSU statement comes in the aftermath of a recent FIR filed by Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), a prominent student body in Mizoram, against Teresa Ningthoujam, a PhD scholar hailing from Manipur studying at Mizoram University. The MZP has urged her expulsion from the university, alleging her participation in collecting funds for procuring arms amidst the ongoing turmoil in Manipur. The MUSU’s statement appears more as a warning than a plea. Mizoram University, a prestigious institution for academic excellence, retains the authority to decide on student expulsion based on disciplinary grounds. The case of Teresa Ningthoujam, a student at Mizoram University, is solely within the jurisdiction of the institute where she pursued her studies.

In the Imphal valley, many student organizations, including the Manipur University Students’ Union, often have hidden influencers behind them. The longstanding and intricate issue of a nexus between militant groups and student organizations in Manipur is evident. Moreover, numerous student organizations like the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) and the Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) maintain connections with, and receive funding from, valley militant groups such as UNLF, PREPAK, and KYKL. These student bodies have evolved into spokespersons for militant groups, manipulated and orchestrated by them.

It is widely acknowledged that Manipur University has become a breeding ground for militants. The MUSU elections are even influenced by the diktats of these militant groups. Each militant faction has its own student wing, all vying to control the student union elections at MU.

The complex relationship between militants and student bodies not only compromises academic integrity but also creates an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. Students, who should ideally be focused on academic pursuits and constructive activism, find themselves entangled in a web of political and militant influences.
